So here is a timelapse of my most recent painting (in progress) with the working title "Force Fed". The idea was inspired by a photo series and poem posted by Adrian McDonald (@lexonart on Instagram) of a woman covered in dried mud at a dinner table. I wanted to use this image to create a reference photo of my own, and make a small painting that references things that I feel I've had to accept against my own will and wants because the world is set up a certain way. I believe the idea is to combat certain ideas that we sort of deem "necessary" or write off as rites of passage that are actually pointless, demeaning, and honestly harmful in a bunch of ways. There are discussions around this piece that I would like to curate at some point within a community space! I'm working on methods of how I might engage my audience and supporters to really speak and exchange thoughts on these sorts of things. I have a complex relationship with the idea of "necessary evils" and I really think this work, once completed, will showcase my personal attitude towards these ideas we sort of adapt to as hegemony. Artistically, from a technique standpoint, I am challenging myself to not use the color black when mixing my paint, and I am using the method of color mixing through complementary colors (my favorite way to pair colors btw) to make my darker tones in the piece.
